25+ YEARS OF SERVICE
Coppell, Katherine – Claire Chapin Epps Family YMCA
April, a Swim Team volunteer parent, shared her story of Hope and Possibility with the YMCA of Coastal Carolina Leadership Team. She said, “My son is Autistic. Years ago we came to the Y for additional swim lessons. Jillian immediately recognized and remembered my son. She said that’s she had seen him swim and that he could be on swim team.
“He could be part of what?”, I asked.
I never thought he would be part of a swim team. We were just there for lessons.
She has been one of his biggest advocates and supporters since. He has learned, has grown, and developed so many friends and social skills through the program.
Both our lives have been profoundly impacted by swim team’s inclusion and support. There are special people in the world who see the child behind the sensory meltdowns, hesitation to just jump in, frustrating moments behind the block, and the need for things to be explained 10 times. This is the child that is encouraged and coached regardless of the challenges.
We were invited once to participate in a Special Olympics team. When I mentioned it to my son he said, “No thank you. I am already part of my team.” That statement was everything for a child with daily struggles. He knew he already had a home. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Merry Christmas to our Y family, friends, and supporters!
The YMCA was founded on Christian principles in 1844 in London, England and then expanded to this country in 1851 to Boston and spread across the country and the world. Our Coastal Carolina YMCA was founded in 1983 and has impacted thousands of lives over the last 40 years. While Christian principles guide how the Y serves the underserved and cares for our communities across the world, we are not a religious organization.
I have spent several decades working with YMCAs in Israel and Palestine in the Middle East, understanding how different cultures apply Christian principles through welcoming all faiths and backgrounds. This year has been especially difficult for families in that region, and I pray daily for peace for the people experiencing turmoil right now.
As we prepare to celebrate Christmas and the birth of Jesus, we follow Christ’s teachings to love all neighbors and help those that do not share our exact beliefs.
We listen.
We respond.
We help those in need.
We share.
We welcome all to be a part of the YMCA of Coastal Carolina.
We inspire hope and possibility for all.
Thank you for your support, care, and love of the Y throughout 2023. We look forward to serving you and expanding our mission in 2024
Sincerely,
David Byrd

The YMCA of Coastal Carolina would like to recognize our staff that go above and beyond every day to make a difference in the lives of our members. Help us reward our Y heroes for the selfless work they do every day by telling us your Y story and how that special Y staff has impacted your life.
The annual Fore the Kids Fundraiser was held at TopGolf in Myrtle Beach to raise money to support the YMCA of Coastal Carolina’s Hope and Possibilities Fund. The Hope and Possibilities fund makes it possible for families in need to have access to all the YMCA offers to the community: swim lessons, youth sports, wellness, Afterschool, and more.
Our donors and sponsors make it possible. Together, we can teach more kids to swim, help more kids be a part of a team, support more in our community with chronic conditions, assist more to join the Y, and so much more by donating to the Hope and Possibilities Fund.

Everyone has access to the YMCA thanks to donor support. Safe spaces for kids to learn and grow. Outreach to seniors who are feeling isolated. Opportunities to get moving and experience the joy of better health. We do not turn anyone away for membership or any of our programs due to financial assistance. These are just a few of the many reasons to give to the Y. Help us support our mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
At the Y, we connect people to a greater sense of purpose and to each other to make our community stronger.
