What’s the YMCA?

The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) was founded in London in 1844 by George Williams. Williams wanted to provide a wholesome, Christian alternative to life on the streets to young men away from home for the first time. They offered Bible study and prayer.

In 1851, the first YMCA in the United States was founded in Boston by sea captain and missionary, Thomas Valentine Sullivan. The YMCA movement quickly spread across the United States.

Today, our YMCA, together with YMCAs across the nation, is the largest community service organizaion.

The YMCA of Coastal Carolina is a registered 501(c)3 charity.
